He enlisted for nine months in the 8th Massachusetts Infantry at Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts. On 30 Oct 1862 he mustered in as a Private in Company H at Camp Lander, Wenham, Essex County, Massachusetts. He mustered out with the Regiment at Wenham, Massachusetts. On 19 Nov 1864 Andrews enlisted in the U.S. Navy at Boston, Massachusetts and reported to the receiving ship USS Ohio. He was assigned to duty on the USS Quaker City. He transferred to the receiving ship USS Princeton in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and was discharged on 28 Aug 1865. Andrews was a member of Custer Post No. 6 of Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington. He was admitted on 4 Oct 1891 to the Washington Soldiers Home at Orting, Pierce County, Washington, and was discharged on 16 Feb 1892 at his own request. Death occurred either on 21 Oct 1897 at age 53 or 21 Oct 1898 at age 54 at Western Washington Hospital for Insane, Fort Steilacoom, Pierce County, Washington. He is buried in a G.A.R. section of the cemetery.
