John McKinnon enlisted as Private, Co. F, 9th U.S. Infantry, at Humboldt, CA, and was discharged at Sitka, Alaska Territory, 28 May 1868. John McKinnon enlisted as Private, Co. I, 2nd U.S. Infantry, at Sacramento, CA, 28 Nov 1868 and mustered out at Sitka, Alaska Territory, 28 Nov 1871.
John McKinnon was a member of W. H. Seward Post No. 36 of Juneau, Alaska Territory. In 1891 he served as Post Officer of the Guard.
