Levi changed the spelling of his family name from Rosebrough to Rosebraugh because he felt that the latter was closer to the preferred pronunciation of "Rose-braw".

Levi Rosebrough, married Miss Frances Fisher Sept. 5, 1852 (SIC); she was born in Ross Co., Ohio, Feb. 2, 1832; He lived in Indiana until he was 12 years of age, when, with his parents, he came to Illinois and settled in Coles Co., in 1843. On being married, he rented his father’s place and farmed the same one year. In 1853, leaving his wife in Coles County, he went to California, going the overland route by oxen-object, mining-remaining two years; he met with fair success; in 1855, he returned via Panama and New York, to this county, renting a farm and farming the same until 1859, when he bought sixty acres, and in 1867, he built his residence, where he lived since. In September, 1861, he enlisted in the 5th I. V. C., and was in service over three years; was in the battles of Vicksburg, Meridian, Jackson, and many minor engagements.
