Born in New York. Enlisted in the 84th New York Infantry at Brooklyn, New York to serve three years. Mustered in as a Private in Company D on 23 May 1861. Promoted to Corporal 11 Jul 1862, and Sergeant 1 Jul 1863. Reenlisted as a Veteran Volunteer on 12 Feb 1864. Transferred to Company H, 5th New York Veteran Infantry, and mustered in as 1st Lieutenant of Company H on 17 May 1864. Mustered out with Company H on 21 Aug 1865 at Hart's Island, New York Harbor. He was a member of Custer Post No. 6 of Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington. Died in Ashland, Jackson County, Oregon.
