Born at Oakthorpe, Leicestershire, England, he immigrated to the United States in 1856. A resident of Jefferson, Monroe County, Wisconsin when he enlisted. Mustered in at Wisconsin. Mustered out at Richmond, Virginia. After his service he returned to Monroe County, Wisconsin where he farmed. He married Mary Ursula White in Iowa about 1878. By 1880 he was a resident of Lime Creek, Cerro Gordo County, Iowa where he farmed. He relocated to Anacortes, Skagit County, Washington by 1900 where he worked as a day laborer. He was a member of General Emory Post No. 68 at Anacortes, Washington. He died at Anacortes, Washington. His headstone incorrectly spells his place of birth as Oskthorpe.
