A farmer and resident of Atrium Township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania when he enlisted 18 Apr 1861 in Company H, 13th Pennsylvania Infantry at Butler County, Pennsylvania. Mustered in as a Private, 25 Apr 1861. Mustered out 6 Aug 1861 at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania at the end of his term of service. He reenlisted at Butler County for three years' service, 17 Sep 1861, in Company H, 78th Pennsylvania Infantry. Mustered in as a Private 12 Oct 1861. Wounded in action at New Hope Church, Georgia, 27 May 1864. Later promoted to Corporal. He mustered out with the regiment, 4 Nov 1864, at Kittanning, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania. After his service he returned to Franklin County, Pennsylvania where he married Mary C. Graham in 1865. He relocated to Kansas in 1875 and then Washington Territory about 1877 residing at Dayton, Columbia County. He was a member of Alfred Sully Post No. 3 at Dayton, Washington, serving the post as Senior Vice Commander in 1884. By 1900 he was a resident of Almira, Lincoln County, Washington where he served as Postmaster. He was admitted to the National Veterans Home at Sawtelle, Los Angeles County, California, 27 Sep 1906. He was discharged at his own request, 28 Jul 1910, and returned to Lincoln County, Washington. He was admitted to the Washington Soldiers Home at Orting, Pierce County, Washington, 21 Jan 1913. He was honorably discharged 1 May 1913 and admitted to the Soldiers Colony at Orting on the same day. He was honorably discharged from the Soldiers Colony and transferred to the Washington Veterans Home at Retsil, Kitsap County, Washington, 4 May 1914, where he died.
