Born in Vermont. Drafted, he reported for enlistment in the 83rd New York Infantry to serve three years at Malone, Franklin County, New York. Mustered in as a Private in Company A the same day he enlisted. Wounded in action on 6 May 1864 at the Wilderness, Virginia. Transferred to Company K, 97th New York Infantry on 7 Jun 1864. Discharged for disability at Davids Island, New York Harbor. A member of Custer Post No. 6 of Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington. According to a newspaper article published on 30 May 1929, he was one of the 40 remaining members of Custer Post, which 20 years prior had a membership of more than 300. Admitted to the Washington State Veterans Home at Retsil, Kitsap County, Washington on 17 Apr 1936. Died at the Veterans Home Hospital. His grave marker lists his date of birth as 8 Aug 1842 contradicting his death certificate. Some of his military records list his last name as "Bennings".
