Born in Pennsylvania. A resident of Hazleton, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania when he enlisted in the 11th Pennsylvania Infantry for three years at Mauch Chunk, Carbon County, Pennsylvania. Mustered in as a Sergeant in Company H on 8 Nov 1861. Re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer and promoted to 1st Sergeant on 1 Jan 1864. Commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant on 30 Jun 1865, but not mustered. Mustered out with his Company at Harrisburg, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. A member of Custer Post No. 6 of Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington. Served as Post Commander in 1901 and Post Sergeant Major in 1907 and 1911-1914. Died in Tacoma, Washington. Some military records spell his last name as "Freese".
