Born in Massachusetts. Enlisted in the 7th Massachusetts Infantry for three years at Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts. Mustered in as a Private in Company D the same day he enlisted. Promoted to Corporal 1 Jan 1863. Wounded in the leg on 3 May 1863 during the Battle of Salem Church, Virginia, part of the Battle of Chancellorsville. Immediately after the battle, Salem Church became a field hospital. Afterwards he was transferred to the Eastern Troop Convalescent Camp. The Jul-Aug 1863 muster roll indicates that he had been appointed a Ward Master in the Camp. He continued in that role until he was discharged for disability. A member of Custer Post No. 6 of Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington. Died in Tacoma, Washington. His military and pension records spell his first name "Matthew".
