After his service Gwinnup returned to Indiana where he married Anna S. Miller, 25 Oct 1865. The 1880 U.S. Census reports he was a resident of Montezuma, Parke County, Indiana and lists his occupation as a plasterer. He relocated to Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington Territory after 1880 where he was a member of Custer Post No. 6 of Tacoma, Washington Territory. By 1889 he settled in Whatcom County, Washington Territory where he continued working as a plasterer. He died at Bellingham, Whatcom County, Washington.
