A resident of Clarendon, Vermont when he enlisted in the 12th Vermont Infantry for nine months at Rutland, Vermont. On 27 Sep 1862 appointed 1st Sergeant. Mustered in at Brattleboro, Vermont on 4 Oct 1862. On 14 Feb 1863 became acting 2nd Lieutenant of Company K. Commissioned 2nd Lieutenant on 10 Mar 1863. Mustered in as 2nd Lieutenant of Company K for seven months at Washington, DC on 27 Apr 1863. Mustered out at Brattleboro, Vermont. A member of Christopher L. Skeels Post No. 349 of Hartland, Niagara County, New York until 31 Dec 1894. Later became a member of Luther C. Ladd Post No. 17 of Puyallup, Pierce County, Washington. On 22 Feb 1910 admitted to the Washington State Soldiers Home at Orting, Pierce County, Washington. Died in Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington. He is buried in a G.A.R. section of the cemetery. Both his enlistment papers and Soldiers Home application list Meadville, Pennsylvania as his place of birth, while his death certificate lists Vermont.
