Born in Pennsylvania. A resident of Lovilia, Monroe County, Iowa when he enlisted in the 6th Iowa Infantry. Mustered in as a Private in Company E on 17 Jul 1861. Promoted to 8th Corporal on 31 Jan 1862. Promoted to 2nd Sergeant on 27 Sep 1862. Wounded in foot, ankle, and back slightly at Missionary Ridge, Tennessee on 25 Nov 1863. Reenlisted and mustered as a Veteran Volunteer on 26 Jan 1864. Wounded at Kenesaw Mountain, Georgia on 27 Jun 1864. Promoted to 1st Sergeant on 1 Jan 1865. Promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on 1 Jan 1865. The 6th Iowa Infantry marched in the Grand Review in Washington, DC on 24 May 1865. Mustered out at Louisville, Kentucky on 21 Jul 1865. A member of G. K.
