Born in Chester County, Pennsylvania. A resident of Carrollton, Carroll County, Iowa when he enlisted in the 39th Iowa Infantry for three years. Mustered in as a Private in Company E on 3 Sep 1862. The Regiment marched in the Grand Review in Washington, DC on 24 May 1865. Mustered out in Washington, DC on 5 Jun 1865. Discharged at Clinton, Iowa. A member of A. J. Smith Post No. 17 of Drain, Douglas County, Oregon. Later joined Geo. G. Sykes Post No. 28 of Elkton, Douglas County, Oregon as a charter member. Served the Post as Sergeant Major in 1884 and 1885. Died in Elkton, Oregon. GAR star inscribed on headstone.
