Born in Berkshire County, Massachusetts. Enlisted in the 1st Tennessee Infantry for three years at Barbourville, Knox County, Kentucky. Mustered in as a Private in Company G at Kingston, Roane County, Tennessee on 21 Aug 1861. Promoted to 1st Sergeant of Company G on 13 Jan 1862. Captured in Roane County, Tennessee on 10 Feb 1863. On 26 Feb 1863 confined in Richmond, Virginia (according to his obituary, Libby Prison). On 7 Mar 1863 paroled at City Point, Virginia and reported to Camp Parole, Maryland on 9 Mar 1863. Sent to Camp Chase, Ohio on 10 Mar 1863 where he was assigned to Company B. On 11 Jun 1863 rejoined Company G. Captured at Cumberland Mountain, Tennessee on 21 Jun 1863. On 26 Jun 1863 confined in Richmond, Virginia (again according to his obituary, Libby Prison). On 14 Jul 1863 paroled at City Point, Virginia and reported to Camp Parole, Maryland on 15 Jul 1863. Sent to Camp Chase, Ohio on 17 Jul 1863 and arrived on 23 Jul 1863 where he was assigned to Company B and was there until 1 Sep 1863. Sometime between 20 Oct and 31 Oct 1863 was sent to his Regiment. On 3 Dec 1863 rejoined Company G. On or about 12 May 1864 deserted. Returned to his unit on 19 Apr 1865 and having complied with the conditions of the President's proclamation, the charge of desertion was dropped. Mustered out at Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee. Apparently at some point he was reduced to the ranks. A member of Luther C. Ladd Post No. 17 of Puyallup, Pierce County, Washington. Admitted to the Washington State Soldiers Home at Orting, Pierce County, Washington on 13 May 1901 and discharged at his own request on 17 Aug 1904. Re-admitted to the Soldiers Home on 10 Apr 1905 and discharged at his own request on 8 Dec 1905. Admitted to the Washington State Soldiers Home Colony at Orting, Washington on 15 Jul 1907. Died at Orting, Washington.
