Born in Perrysville, Ashland County, Ohio. Enlisted at Niagara Falls, Niagara County, New York for two years. Mustered in on 22 May 1861. Wounded in action at Cedar Mountain, Virginia on 9 Aug 1862. Discharged for disability, General Hospital, Alexandria, Virginia. He wrote a letter to the Niagara Gazette of Niagara Falls as follows: Montgomery Co., MD, Camp [Schuler] near Darenstown [Darnestown], Sept. 23, 1861.
"We are camped here in Maryland....We are about four miles from the Potomac River. Great changes have taken place in our regiment within the last four weeks for the better....One month ago the majority of the men had the idea they were going home at the end of three months. They were so disatisfied with everything now the contrary are satisfyied with everything.
"Everyone wishes to stay until peace is restored.... The men are fast perfecting their drill and learning the art of war. We are hoping soon to test the fighting qualities of the 'Bloody 28th'.
"It would be a pleasure to see our loved ones at home but we wish to see our country preserved.... We have done some hard work and expect to do more. There is some sickness in the regiment but nothing seriously. Some have had the 'shakes' of which I have had a taste, otherwise I have been well, tough and hardy. We do not wish to be discouraged now, nor as long as the war lasts, but we do want to hear the command 'forward march'....Tell every man to enlist that can possibly leave and come out and help us make an end of the secesh rascals.
