Born in Huntington, Hampshire County, Massachusetts. On 27 Apr 1863, commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant in the 2nd South Carolina Infantry (African Descent). Mustered in Company B for three years at Beaufort, Beaufort County, South Carolina on 22 May 1863. On 15 Jul 1863 assigned special duty as acting Regimental Quartermaster. Was at the storming of Fort Wagner, Morris Island, South Carolina on 18 Jul 1863, and remained engaged in the siege of Morris Island. Designation of the Regiment changed to 34th U.S. Colored Infantry on 8 Feb 1864. Engaged in the movements which resulted in the Union defeat at the Battle of Olustee, Florida on 20 Feb 1864. On 20 Jun 1864 again detailed as acting Regimental Quartermaster. Was engaged in the Battle of Honey Hill, South Carolina on 30 Nov 1864. On 1 Aug 1865 detailed as Assistant Provost Marshal at Lake City, Columbia County, Florida. On 12 Oct 1865 commissioned Captain of Company D. During Nov-Dec 1865 on detached service as Judge Advocate at Lake City, Florida. On 26 Nov 1865 the residents of Lake City, Florida presented him with a letter requesting he become principal of their first free public school. A copy of the letter was also sent to Regimental Headquarters. On 1 Dec 1865 he sent a letter to Regimental Headquarters to allow him to resign to accept the Lake City position. He received permission to resign on 9 Jan 1866. His resignation became effective on 26 Jan 1866. A member of Custer Post No. 6 of Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington. Served the Post as Chaplain in 1890, Commander in 1911, and Chaplain again in 1913. Elected a Companion of the First Class in the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States (MOLLUS) through the Washington Commandery in Jan 1891. Served the Washington Commandery as Senior Vice Commander (1912-1913) and Commander (1914-1915). Died in Seattle, King County, Washington.
