Born in Rochester, Monroe County, New York. A resident of Onarga, Iroquois County, Illinois when he enlisted in the 9th Illinois Cavalry for three years. Mustered in as a Private in Company C on 20 Nov 1862. Was captured and held as a prisoner of war. Mustered out on 8 Jul 1865 to date from 30 May 1865 at Springfield, Sangamon County, Illinois. A charter member of Luther C. Ladd Post No. 17 of Puyallup, Pierce County, Washington. Served the Post as Adjutant in 1884 and Commander in 1885. Died in Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington.
