Born in Waterville, Lamoille County, Vermont. A resident of Waterville, Vermont when he enlisted in the 3rd Vermont Infantry for three years at Johnson, Lamoille County, Vermont on 1 Jun 1861. Mustered in as 2nd Sergeant of Company E at Camp Baxter, St. Johnsbury, Caledonia County, Vermont on 16 Jul 1861. Promoted to 1st Sergeant on 18 Feb 1862. Wounded in action (wounded in ear) at Burned Chimneys near Lee's Mills, Virginia on 16 Apr 1862. Discharged for disability at Washington, DC on 6 Jun 1862. Commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant in the 1st U.S. Colored Infantry, and joined Company H for duty at Fort Monroe, Virginia. Company H served as sharp shooters for the Regiment. From 11 Jul to 9 Nov 1863 served as commanding officer of Company H. From 26 Nov 1864 to 26 Jan 1865 and from 9 Apr to 30 Apr 1865 again served as commanding officer of Company H. On 20 May 1865 officially promoted to Captain of Company H at Goldsboro, North Carolina. Mustered out with his Company at Newbern, North Carolina. A member of Custer Post No. 6 of Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington. Served as Post Commander in 1894. Died in Tacoma, Washington.
