Born in Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany. A resident of Clayton County, Iowa when he enlisted in the 4th Iowa Infantry. Mustered in as a Private in Company G the same day he enlisted. Mustered out at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Admitted to the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers at Sawtelle, Los Angeles County, California on 18 Sep 1893 and discharged at his own request on 14 Mar 1894. A member of Custer Post No. 6 of Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington. The records show that he was admitted and discharged from the Washington State Soldiers Home at Orting, Pierce County, Washington nine times - the first was 24 Jun 1895 to 2 Jun 1896, then 26 Jun 1896 to 5 Mar 1897, followed by 20 Aug 1897 to 24 Jan 1899, then 17 Jun 1899 to 25 May 1900, followed by 3 Nov 1900 to 27 Jul 1901, then 22 Mar 1902 to 28 Apr 1904, followed by 14 Oct 1904 to 31 Oct 1906, then 26 Apr 1907 to 16 Apr 1912, and finally 1 May 1912 to 25 Mar 1915. He was admitted to the Washington State Veterans Home at Retsil, Kitsap County, Washington on 7 Dec 1921 where he died. Various records show his year of birth as 1834, 1836, 1837, 1838, and 1842. His Retsil application, death certificate, and headstone shows 1841. Some military records spell his last name as "Jackle".
