Born at Saxony, Germany and immigrated to the United States about 1843. He worked as a tailor and was a resident of Mequon, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin when he enlisted in the 26th Wisconsin Infantry. Mustered in as a Private in Company A. On 2 May 1863 he was taken as a prisoner of war during the Battle of Chancellorsville, Virginia. He was a resident of Oakland, Alameda County, California by 1875 and was naturalized there as a U.S. citizen, 31 Jul 1875. He married Mary Haas, also a German immigrant, before 1878. He was a member of Custer Post No. 6 of Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington. By 1900 he was a resident of Whatcom County, Washington where he continued working as a tailor. He died at Bellingham, Whatcom County, Washington. Military records spell his last name as "Jaenig".
